Canning 101: Apple Jelly Workshop – Tuesday, August 20th

We are very excited to announce the third and final workshop in our summer canning series, apple jelly! We hope to see everybody there. Below is the description:

The apples growing throughout our local yards, parks, and roadsides are just starting to ripen! Did you know that these fruits are rich in pectin, and even the most sour apples can be turned into a beautiful and tasty jelly? In this workshop, we’ll combine barely-ripe apples with sugar and a bit of creme de cassis liqueur, to make delicious, natural jelly, preserved in glass jars for future enjoyment. We’ll also cover the basics of modern hot-water bath canning techniques, equipment, safety issues, and resources for the home canner. Each participant will take home a small jar of jelly and the recipe.

Suggested Donation: $10, Nobody is turned away

Greenhorns screening, Thursday Aug 15th, 7:00 pm at Camas Books, 2620 Quadra St

greenhorns movieSLUGS and Camas Books & Infoshop have teamed up for a screening of the wonderful documentary Greenhorns.

From their website:
“The Greenhorns documentary film, completed after almost 3 years in production, explores the lives of America’s young farming community – its spirit, practices, and needs. It is the filmmaker’s hope that by broadcasting the stories and voices of these young farmers, we can build the case for those considering a career in agriculture – to embolden them, to entice them, and to recruit them into farming.”

Suggested donation is $5 – nobody is turned away. All proceeds go to Camas.

Come early to ensure you get in!

Herbal First Aid (For youth aged 13 – 30)

Herbs have been used for thousands of years to cure everything from life threatening illnesses to indigestion! In this workshop, participants will learn to make (and take home) a tincture and a salve. The herbs and herbal preparations we are making are gentle and mild, for moderate conditions.

Ali Jopp has been practicing folkloric Western herbal medicine for some years now; her education has consisted of some college, some books, some apprenticeships, herbalist friends and experimentation on herself and willing participants!

Suggested donation $15, nobody is turned away
